Par Pharmaceutical Companies Inc., a US-based specialty pharmaceutical company, announced recently that it had finally settled its drug pricing lawsuits. The suit alleged that the company had caused several government entities to wrongfully pay inflated reimbursements for drugs under Medicaid or and other programs. Par vehemently denied the allegations. Other pharmaceutical manufacturers were also implicated in the case. According to Par’s website, upon execution of definitive settlement documents and certain government and court approvals, the settlement will resolve lawsuits relating to federal contributions to state Medicaid programs in 49 states (excluding Illinois); it will also settle claims from Texas, Florida, Alaska, South Carolina and Kentucky relating to their Medicaid programs. Many observers, especially South Carolina litigation attorneys, view settlements like this as an important symbol of how an industry has failed consumers.
