A settlement was just reached in a South Carolina class action suit in which lawyers alleged that Chase Home Finance LLC had illegally handles its mortgage and foreclosure practices with 6,000 active members of the military. The suit was a public relations nightmare for the mortgage giant. Of the $56 million settlement, $27 million will go to cash payments, $8 million in attorney fees, $12 million to the 6,000 class members, and $15 million for members who suffered consequential damages. The settlement will also include provisions requiring the bank to give back the wrongfully foreclosed homes and reduce interest rates to four percent. Chase has apologized to the service members.
