As Number of Robots and Surgeries Increase in American Hospitals, So Do Problems
The Associated Press reported that nearly 1,400 hospitals in the United States have at least one da Vinci system, a three- or four-armed robot that surgeons operate with hand controls at a computer system located several feet away from a patient. Each da Vinci system costs about $1.45 million in addition to $100,000 or more a year in service agreements, and it is used for operations that include removing prostates, gallbladders and wombs, repairing heart valves, shrinking stomachs and transplanting organs, according to the AP. WIST reports that a grandfather and his three children planned to spend the night on the pontoon boat after spending the day fishing, anchoring near the island when the boat was hit by the cuddy-cabin boat. DNR officials are investigating the accident and officials said that charges would be filed. The operator of the cuddy-cabin boat was also hospitalized with injuries. The kids on the pontoon boat were ages 3 to 8. One of them suffered a broken arm, while the other two children and the grandfather were treated and released at an area hospital.
